Alaska Wildlife Guide: Brown Bear, Raven, Orca & More

Alaska: The Last Great Wildlife Frontier

Alaska is home to some of the most spectacular wildlife on the planet. From the towering brown bears of the Alaska Peninsula to the acrobatic orcas of the Inside Passage, the state's wild creatures have captivated explorers, scientists, and nature lovers for centuries. At Snow Wave Creations, our designs are inspired by these incredible animals — here's a closer look at some of our favorites.

Brown Bear (Ursus arctos)

Alaska's brown bears are among the largest land predators on Earth. Adult males can weigh over 1,000 pounds, fueled largely by the salmon they consume during the summer and fall runs. The Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak Island are home to some of the densest brown bear populations in the world.

Brown bears are remarkably intelligent and adaptable. They have an extraordinary sense of smell — estimated to be seven times stronger than a bloodhound's — and can remember the location of food sources across vast territories. Despite their size, they can run up to 35 mph in short bursts.

Our Brown Bear Anatomy Tote Bag celebrates these magnificent animals with an educational design that highlights the biology behind the beast.

Raven (Corvus corax)

Few animals are as deeply woven into Alaska Native culture as the raven. In Yup'ik, Tlingit, Haida, and many other traditions, Raven is a trickster, a creator, and a transformer — a being of enormous power and intelligence who shaped the world as we know it.

Scientifically, ravens are among the most intelligent birds on Earth. They use tools, solve complex puzzles, plan for the future, and even appear to play. They form long-term pair bonds and communicate with a remarkable range of vocalizations.

In Alaska, ravens are year-round residents, thriving in conditions that would defeat most other species. Our Raven Waterproof Sticker captures the bold, striking presence of this iconic bird.

Orca (Orcinus orca)

Orcas — killer whales — are apex predators of Alaska's coastal waters. Highly social and extraordinarily intelligent, orcas live in tight family groups called pods, led by matriarchs who pass down hunting techniques and cultural knowledge across generations.

Alaska's waters host both resident orcas (who specialize in fish, particularly salmon) and transient orcas (who hunt marine mammals like sea lions and seals). Watching a pod of orcas hunt in coordinated formation is one of the most breathtaking wildlife experiences Alaska has to offer.

Sea Lion (Eumetopias jubatus)

Steller sea lions are the largest of the eared seals, with adult males reaching up to 2,500 pounds. They're a common and charismatic sight along Alaska's coastline, hauling out on rocky shores in noisy, boisterous colonies.

Sea lions are important predators in Alaska's marine ecosystem, feeding on fish, squid, and octopus. They're also prey for orcas and are deeply connected to the subsistence traditions of Alaska's coastal communities.

Our Sea Lion Waterproof Sticker brings this playful giant to life.

Red Salmon / Sockeye (Oncorhynchus nerka)

No animal is more central to Alaska's identity than the salmon. Sockeye — red salmon — are the lifeblood of Bristol Bay, returning from the ocean each summer in their millions to spawn in the rivers where they were born. Their vivid red bodies and hooked jaws at spawning time make them one of Alaska's most visually striking creatures.

Salmon connect ocean and land, feeding everything from bears and eagles to the forests themselves. They are the thread that holds Alaska's ecosystems together.

Halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis)

Pacific halibut are the giants of Alaska's flatfish — the largest can exceed 8 feet in length and 500 pounds in weight. They're a prized sport and commercial fish, and halibut fishing is a beloved tradition for Alaskans and visitors alike.

Our Halibut Run Waterproof Sticker is a nod to the thrill of the catch and the culture of Alaska fishing.
